Quotation Marks

Quotation marks (") are used to enclose direct quotations, titles of literary works, and certain other types of text. They are used in pairs, with the opening quotation mark facing the left and the closing quotation mark facing the right.

Uses of Quotation Marks:

1. Direct Quotations:

Quotation marks are used to enclose the exact words spoken by a person or character. Example: "The sun is shining today," she said.

2. Titles of Literary Works:

Quotation marks are used around titles of short stories, poems, songs, articles, and chapters of books. Example: "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe

3. Titles of Parts of Literary Works:

Quotation marks are used around titles of acts, scenes, chapters, and other parts of literary works. Example: "Act II, Scene 2"

4. Certain Words and Phrases:

Quotation marks can be used around certain words or phrases to emphasize them or indicate irony. Example: The "perfect" plan ended in disaster.

5. Nicknames and Familiar Terms:

Quotation marks can be used to enclose nicknames or familiar terms used to refer to someone. Example: The president is known as "The Great Communicator."

6. NonStandard Usage and Slang:

Quotation marks can be used to indicate nonstandard usage or slang. Example: "That's a sick" car, dude.

7. Quoted Material within Quoted Material:

When quoting material that already contains quotation marks, single quotation marks are used for the inner quotation marks. Example: "She said, 'I'm not going to let him get away with this.'"

8. Quoting from a Source:

When you are quoting a source, quotation marks are used to indicate the exact words being quoted. Example: "According to the study, 'physical activity can reduce the risk of heart disease.'"

9. Quoted Material in Poetry:

In poetry, quotation marks are sometimes used to indicate quoted material within a line. Example: "He cried, "I will not go!""

Exceptions to Quotation Marks:

Quotation marks are not used when:

Paraphrasing or summarizing someone's words

Quoting titles of books, newspapers, or magazines

Citing titles of entire works that are being discussed as a whole

Additional Notes:

Quotation marks should always be placed outside other punctuation marks, such as commas and periods.

When a quotation ends with a question mark or exclamation point, the punctuation mark is placed inside the quotation marks.

In British English, single quotation marks are used for direct quotations, and double quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes.
